Fall was a magical time for me as a child and maybe that’s why it’s still my favorite season. Here are two super cute and fun ideas for kids’ fall treats that you can make with the children you love. These are NOT my original ideas, by the way. But I’ll share my own versions.
Acorn Cookies
Simply unwrap a Hershey’s kiss. I handled the chocolate with plastic gloves to keep from melting my fingerprints on them. The best topper I found was mini Nutter Butter cookies, taken apart. You can also use mini vanilla wafers or mini peanut butter crackers. But I like the texture of the Nutter Butter and it looks more natural. Attach it to the flat part of the kiss with a bit of peanut butter, and finish the look with a mini chocolate chip attached to the mini cookie with more peanut butter. I used a piping bag with a small round tip to make this easier and cleaner. And that’s it. Kids (and adults) of all ages will love to make and eat these.
Owl Cookies
You can use store-bought rolled sugar cookie dough, but if you want the shape to stay the best, use a shortbread dough. Here’s a link to the original recipe: https://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/recipes/a5855/almond-shortbread-owls-recipe-clx1014/
Roll shortbread to about 1/4″ thick, cut out a 2 1/2 circle, make two small round flattened balls for the eyes and attach to the cookie. Press on one almond on its side in between the flattened balls for the beak and 2 large chocolate chips, flat side up, for the eyes. Press on sliced almonds for the wings and sunflower seeds for the feet. Chill the cookies before baking to help the shape stay during baking.
